Holiday Help for Horses In Need

holiday horses need help
Horse in the snow

Winter weather is upon us and its arrival makes your help critical for hundreds of horses in Maine. The MSSPA, New England’s most effective equine rehabilitation facility, has a unique history of success in saving horses from horrific situations. However, help is needed to meet the costs of hay, grain, bedding, and medical treatment for the dozens of animals who are lucky enough to be put into our barns. As the placement of choice for horses seized by Maine’s law enforcement officials, the Society provides the very best of care to these gorgeous animals who have suffered neglect, starvation, abuse, and criminal cruelty. Our philosophy and our services are unlike any other animal welfare organization and the results speak for themselves.

Horse in field
At no cost to Maine taxpayers, the Society receives into its care horses that have suffered abuse or neglect and have been taken from those situations by authorities. The cost of medical treatment, feed, daily care and a secure future for each animal is paid by the MSSPA. Those costs, like many others in our lives, continue to increase. This year the cost of a bale of hay used in our barns averages nearly $7.00, a bag of grain costs on average $12.00, regular, required hoof care costs $35.00 per animal when the farrier visits and veterinary medical care, when needed, rivals the cost of our own health care. The horses rely on us – and on horse lovers like you – to provide for them. They cannot provide for themselves. These kind, loving creatures have already been disappointed by people; we aren’t going to let that happen again. Won’t you please give a gift of sustenance for rescued animals this holiday season? Your generosity will help restore the true meaning of holidays - sharing with those who have less and need help. No amount is too little; each gift is valuable and is spent entirely on direct care of animals. You may donate safely and securely on our website. We don’t share your information or sell our membership list. If you prefer, mail your tax deductible contribution to MSSPA, P.O. Box 10, South Windham, Maine 04082-0010. Please visit the MSSPA farm at 279 River Road, South Windham, Maine any day between 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm. Our barns close at 3:00 pm to permit night feeding of the animals. Stop in and see how your donation is being spent to care for horses.
