MSSPA Receives Real Heroes Award

The Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals, headquartered in South Windham, recently received recognition at the ninth Annual Real Heroes Breakfast sponsored by the American Red Cross of Southern Maine. The Society’s award, given in the category of “Outstanding Animal Rescue” was accepted by its Director, Marilyn L. Goodreau. Charles Harriman of Wachovia Securities presented the award, saying, “The Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals has a long, splendid history of providing outstanding services to the most vulnerable of populations, animals.” Ms. Goodreau, in thanking those assembled at the Marriot Sable Oaks, said the staff and volunteers of the organization deserved acclaim for their selfless work to save the lives of damaged animals. The award will be on display at the Society’s Farm in South Windham.

The Society, founded in Portland in 1872, is one of the nation’s oldest animal welfare agencies. Each year, the non-profit organization provides nearly a million dollars in services to Maine taxpayers by caring for abused or neglected animals who have been seized by law enforcement officials. The Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals does not receive any public funding and is supported by it members, supporters, and contributors.
