Why Become a Member
Since 1872, when the MSSPA was formed to protect the horses then pulling Portland, Maine’s streetcars and fire engines, caring individuals have given generously to the organization because it is a gift to care for those who have served us.
Today, horses and other large animals enrich our lives by providing a meaningful connection with the natural world around us. They give us pleasure as performers, competition partners, companions, and friends. Caring for animals helps teach us compassion and empathy; and it makes our world a better place.
Becoming a member of the MSSPA gives you a voice in the way Maine’s animal laws are enacted and enforced. As a member of the Society, your efforts to improve the lives of abused or neglected animals are combined with the efforts of thousands of others to create a powerful force for positive change.
