The Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals (MSSPA), a nonprofit horse shelter dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of rescued horses, is seeking a compassionate, organized, and enthusiastic Assistant Volunteer Coordinator to join our team.

This position supports the Community Programs Manager in all aspects of our volunteer program, helping to recruit, train, and support the incredible volunteers who make our mission possible. It is an ideal opportunity for someone who enjoys multitasking, working both indoors and outdoors in all seasons and all weather, building relationships, and making a meaningful impact in the lives of people and horses alike.

While experience with horses or equine care is a plus, it is not required. We are happy to train the right candidate who is eager to learn and passionate about people and animal welfare.

Job Duties and Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned as appropriate):
● Participate in prospective volunteer tours and interviews.
● Respond to prospective volunteers’ applications and share information with the
leadership team.
● Coordinate orientation materials and set up the first volunteer shift.
● Meet with new volunteers, ensure necessary paperwork has been completed,
provide a tour of the shelter, and orient new volunteers to assigned tasks.
● Assign daily volunteer tasks in collaboration with barn staff.
● Check in with volunteers throughout their shift, ensuring safety practices are
being followed.
● Facilitate horse grooming and other humane education experiences.
● Update volunteer schedule as needed.
● Respond to volunteer emails and phone calls.
● Check in with volunteers providing tours, running the tack shack, and doing
grounds maintenance.
● Implement and maintain regular volunteer appreciation (e.g. anniversary cards,
‘shout out’ bulletin board; mini gifts/cards for small holidays)
● Grocery shop for volunteer snacks/events.
● Support the coordination, organization, and tasks of various volunteer
community groups, including corporate volunteers, special needs volunteers,
recovery group volunteers, and volunteers from the Southern Maine Women’s
Re-entry Center.
● Provide Visitor Center coverage as needed.
● Horse care and barn chores as needed (feed, water, turn horses in and out,
grooming)

Position Details:
● Part-time, year-round position (16–24 hours per week, depending on the
candidate’s availability)
● The schedule includes Saturdays, Sundays, and one weekday, from 8:00 a.m. to
4:00 p.m. Some flexibility with the schedule, however Saturdays and Sundays are
required.
● Compensation: $20–$22 per hour, based on experience
