Group Volunteering

Group Volunteering

Thank you very much for your interest in volunteering at the MSSPA! With your group’s donation of time, energy, and love, you’ll play an integral role in promoting the health and well-being of all the horses.

The MSSPA welcomes small and large groups to the River Road Farm! Whether you’re part of an organization, business, school, or community group, volunteer opportunities provide an excellent way to increase community engagement and team building. After a tour of the farm to meet the herd, group members work together to accomplish farm chores and other projects that benefit the horses.

Volunteering at the MSSPA means engaging in daily barn chores and special projects required to run a large animal shelter and working farm. The work is physical, and much of it takes place outside. The work varies seasonally and day-by-day but might include cleaning the outdoor paddocks, washing feed buckets, scraping/painting fences, cleaning/maintaining the barn and indoor arena, gardening, or grounds maintenance. Depending on the size of the group, we often split the team into smaller groups for different projects. The MSSPA is open daily from 8 am – 4 pm. Our staff works with volunteer groups to determine the ideal length of their volunteer time.

We can’t wait to see you!

To be best prepared for a great day:

  • Please wear long pants and closed-toed/closed-heel shoes or boots.
  • Choose clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty; the MSSPA is a busy animal shelter and a working farm with lots of dirt, mud, and manure!
  • Carry a refillable water bottle and bring work gloves, if you have them.
  • Sorry, we are unable to offer space for storing personal belongings, particularly valuables. Please plan to keep these items on your person or in a locked vehicle.
  • The MSSPA is a smoke-free and vape-free campus.

We always appreciate when volunteers can print and sign the volunteer waiver (link below) before arriving at the farm. However, should you need a copy, we have plenty on hand.
