Group Volunteering

Group Volunteering

Thank you very much for your interest in volunteering at the Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals! By donating your time, energy, and love to volunteer as a group, you can play an integral role in promoting the health and well-being of all the horses.

The MSSPA welcomes small and large groups to the River Road farm! Whether you’re part of an organization, corporation, school, or community group, volunteer opportunities provide an excellent way to increase community engagement and team building. After a tour of the Society, and the chance to meet and learn about the rescued horses, group members work together to accomplish farm chores and other projects that benefit the horses.

Volunteering here means engaging in daily barn chores and special projects required to run a large animal shelter. The work is physical, and much of it takes place outside. The work varies seasonally and day-by-day but might include cleaning the outdoor paddocks, washing feed buckets, scraping/painting fences, cleaning/maintaining the barn and indoor arena, gardening, or grounds maintenance. Depending on the size of the group, we often split the team into smaller groups for different projects. The MSSPA is open daily from 8 am – 4 pm. The Society staff works with volunteer groups to determine the ideal length of their volunteer time.

Group Volunteering FAQ’s

  • Volunteers should wear long pants and closed-toed/closed-heel shoes or boots.
  • Wear clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty; this is an animal shelter and a working farm, so there is lots of dirt, mud, and manure!
  • We recommend that volunteers bring a water bottle and work gloves if you have them.
  • There is no space to store personal belongings, particularly valuables. Volunteers should plan to keep their belongings on their person or in their vehicles.
  • The MSSPA is a smoke-free and vape-free campus.

Below is a link to the volunteer waiver. We always appreciate when volunteers can print and sign the waiver form before arriving at the farm, however, we have plenty on hand for those who are not able to print the form.
