#NonprofitsWorkforME

The MSSPA celebrates Maine nonprofits that are doing well by doing good.

Our organization, like so many nonprofits in our state, delivers essential services at no cost to Maine taxpayers. Thank you to all of those who are traveling to Augusta on January 17 – Maine Nonprofit Day  – to help inform Maine policymakers regarding the significant role nonprofits play in Maine.

In 2018, the Society provided rehabilitation and rehoming services to more than 100 Maine horses, spent more than $1 million caring for abused, neglected horses, received more than 11,000 hours of volunteer service, employed 12 people, and welcomed the public each and every day of the year. Together with our cohorts in the nonprofit sector and all of those who supported their missions with time and money, we celebrate.

The MSSPA is owned and operated by a volunteer board of directors. Its mission is met through the combined efforts of a small number of paid staff and a fabulously large number of devoted donors and volunteers. In accordance with principles of good governance, its financials are transparent, available on its website and GuideStar. The Society welcomes the public to its River Road farm/licensed animal shelter every day between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to meet the horses and those who work on their behalf.
