Dezzi is an upper-teens Quarter Horse gelding with a beautiful red roan coat and a character that’s only just beginning to emerge. He came to the MSSPA as part of a group of six horses surrendered to the State of Maine after their owner, who had spent years helping horses in need, found herself unable to provide the care they deserved. It was a heartbreaking decision, but one made out of love.
When Dezzi first arrived, he was frightened. That fear often showed up as constant movement, making him difficult to be around as he paced anxiously through every interaction, more likely to run through a person than stop and think.
As the days passed, something changed.
With consistency, good care, and the chance to simply settle in, Dezzi began to relax. The worried horse we first met has slowly given way to one who is thoughtful and willing – a reminder that behavior often changes when a horse finally feels safe.
Dezzi is still working through several medical challenges, including ongoing evaluation after treatment for EPM. His feet also require significant rehabilitation, and balancing for the farrier remains difficult. We are hopeful that as his strength, comfort, and overall health improve, those challenges will become easier for him as well.
His best friend, Bailey, is never far away, and together they’re beginning a new chapter.
We’re still getting to know Dezzi, but one thing already seems clear: beneath everything he’s been through is a sweet horse who simply needed the chance to catch his breath.
