Copper
Born: 2004
Breed: Thoroughbred
Gender: Gelding
Color: Chestnut

Copper came to us under difficult circumstances—his owner, facing a domestic violence situation, made the heartbreaking decision to let him go so he could receive the care she could no longer provide. When he arrived, he was thin and in need of support.
Today, Copper requires ongoing management for a severe case of heaves, a chronic respiratory condition that makes breathing a daily challenge without specialized care. He may very well hold the title of “most expensive horse on the farm,” but to those who know him, he’s worth every bit of it.

In the pasture, he’s playful and fun, especially with his group of geldings, always finding a way to stir up a little mischief – his favorite game is bitey face. But there’s more to him than that – he’s also a steady presence for the younger horses, quietly teaching them how to be part of a herd and how to play without crossing the line. While he loves playing with the geldings, his heart belongs to the beautiful Phoenix, his pasture companion and partner in crime.

He has also shown us that he has a few tricks up his sleeve, including a well-timed smile that tends to win hearts quickly. It’s clear he was loved once, and he hasn’t forgotten what that feels like.
