Phoenix
Born: 2020
Breed: Thoroughbred
Sex: Mare
Color: Gray

Phoenix arrived at the MSSPA alongside Motion after being surrendered through an animal welfare case. By the time help arrived, she was in heartbreaking condition – severely underweight, with overgrown hooves, painful rain rot, and a body condition score of just 1 out of 9.
Despite everything she had endured, Phoenix met her new world with quiet grace.
An old racing injury means Phoenix will never have a riding career, but that is only a small part of her story. She is a kind, easygoing mare who tends to take life as it comes. Whether she’s being led around the farm or simply enjoying the company of her herd, Phoenix is usually happy to go with the flow.
Most of the time.
Every now and then, the spark behind her gentle nature shines through, and Phoenix reminds everyone that she is still a young and fiery thoroughbred with plenty of spirit. Those moments are a joy to witness – a glimpse of the horse beneath the hardships she has overcome.

Like many horses who have experienced prolonged stress and deprivation, Phoenix developed a cribbing habit. With thoughtful management, it is something she lives comfortably with and does not let define her.
Today, Phoenix is healthy, safe, and surrounded by friends. She may never be a riding horse, but she has already proven that a horse’s value is measured by far more than the work they can do.
