Scout is an older Paint gelding who came to the MSSPA as part of a group of six horses surrendered to the State of Maine.
When he first arrived, Scout was one of the most difficult horses to catch. He wanted nothing to do with people, desperately hobbling away despite obvious discomfort from arthritis. Watching him struggle to outrun the people trying to help him was heartbreaking.
And then something changed.
The moment Scout realized he was safe, the frightened horse seemed to disappear. Beneath all that fear was an affectionate, gentle gelding who couldn’t get enough scratches, pets, and reassurance. Within just a few days, he had completely won over the barn staff – and catching him has been easy ever since.
Scout is still working with his veterinarian to find the right combination of treatments to keep him comfortable, but he’s already taught us an important lesson: sometimes what looks like difficult behavior is simply fear asking for understanding.
Today, Scout is much more interested in soaking up attention than running away from it, and we’re excited to continue watching his confidence – and comfort – grow.
