Around the MSSPA, Laurenke is known by a much more affectionate name: Old Lady.
This beautiful Friesian mare is in her mid-20s and carries herself with the quiet confidence of a horse who has seen just about everything life has to offer. Having arrived as part of the large Friesian seizure, she has undoubtedly lived through difficult chapters, yet she meets each day with remarkable steadiness and grace.
When breakfast or turn-out is running late, Old Lady is not afraid to express her opinion. A well-timed series of kicks to the stall door and an impressive collection of grumpy faces directed at passing horses make it perfectly clear that meals should arrive on schedule and turn-out should be prompt. Fortunately for the humans, she saves all of that sass for her herdmates and remains kind and respectful with the people who care for her.
Laurenke is a pleasure to handle and a dependable partner for routine care. While she still requires sedation for her hind feet during farrier visits, she continues to make progress, and each trim builds a little more confidence.
As one of the oldest Friesians on the farm, Laurenke accepts the role of matriarch with her herdmates with quiet patience, as though she’s always known that’s exactly where she belongs.
There’s something reassuring Laurenke. Steady, wise, and quietly in charge, she’s the kind of horse who reminds you that true leadership rarely has to announce itself.
