Chiquita is the lone Thoroughbred in our Friesian herd, arriving at the MSSPA after serving as a surrogate mare on the breeding farm where the other horses were seized. Along with the other Friesians currently at the MSSPA, Chiquita is a part of an active court case in Vermont. From the moment she stepped off the trailer, she seemed determined to convince everyone she was the perfect lady.
For a while, she succeeded.
Anyone could handle her, groom her, or fuss over her, and she accepted it all with quiet grace. But as Chiquita settled in and began feeling better, another side of her personality started to emerge.
She has opinions.
Most of the time, Chiquita is kind and easy to be around. But every now and then, her inner diva makes an appearance, reminding us that she has very clear ideas about how she’d like things done. Like many Thoroughbreds, she’s an incredibly sensitive mare. Cold weather, buzzing flies, or handling that feels unclear or unfair can all earn you a strongly worded equine review.
After treatment for Lyme disease, many of her bigger reactions became easier to understand, but her sensitivity remains an important part of who she is.
Chiquita shares her herd with Laurenke (“Old Lady”) and Merienna (“Baby”), creating a trio that’s equal parts elegance and sass.
For the people willing to listen, Chiquita is an exceptional teacher. She asks for clarity, fairness, and thoughtful handling – and when she receives those things, she offers her trust in return.
