Wren is a Thoroughbred mare who recently came to the MSSPA after being surrendered to the State of Maine. She arrived in one of the most heartbreaking physical conditions we’ve seen in recent years. Severely emaciated, with every rib, vertebra, and bone visible beneath her patchy coat, Wren has an incredibly long road to recovery ahead of her.
And yet, if you spend even a few minutes with her, that’s not what you’ll remember.
You’ll remember her spirit.
Many horses in Wren’s condition are understandably exhausted, physically and emotionally. Wren is different. From the moment she arrived, she has greeted each day with a remarkable will to fight and an apparent confidence that better days are ahead.
Recovering from this degree of starvation is a careful process. Weight must return slowly and safely, giving her body time to heal. Day by day, Wren is growing a little stronger, and we’re beginning to see glimpses of the healthy horse waiting underneath.
Despite everything she’s endured, Wren already knows that she is deeply loved. Scratches, grooming, and spending time with people are among her favorite things – and if you’re lucky, she’ll return the favor by grooming you right back.
She has already captured the hearts of everyone at the farm. We can’t wait to watch the rest of Wren emerge, one day at a time.
